Top 10 Islands in the World

Popular travel review site TripAdvisor has come out with the results of its annual Travelers’ Choice® awards. Among them are the awards for the best islands in the world. Wonder which ones made the top 10, according to the opinions of TripAdvisor readers? Then read on…

1. Ambergris Caye, Belize Cayes

For the second year in a row, Ambergris Caye takes top honours. The beautiful Belize island offers the perfect blend of modern development and laid-back tranquillity. A mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island, the largest in Belize, and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads. Reef divers drool over the Belize Barrier Reef and the Blue Hole, a 400-feet deep circle of limestone that teems with angelfish, Elkhorn coral, cleaner shrimp and stalactites.

Ambergris Caye

2. Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Scuba diving, horseback riding, sunbathing… take your pick. “Provo” offers plenty for the happy couple to do, including picture-perfect coastlines to walk along, hand in hand. The island itself is relatively tranquil; try Malcolm Beach to get even further away from crowds.

3. Bora Bora, Society Islands

The relatively small island of Bora Bora is an activity giant, offering visitors the chance to experience a 4×4 safari, sunbathe and swim at white sandy beaches, dive in a natural underwater park among fish and corals, experience thrilling shark feedings, or circle the turquoise lagoon by boat. And Bora Bora is a superlative romantic spot. Fall captive to this lush gem of a Polynesian island by sharing an intimate midnight dinner on the beach; visiting the Lagoonarium, the Diving Centre, the Coral Gardens or the Leopard Rays Trench; or taking it all in from the lofty heights of 2,300-foot Mount Otemanu.

Bora Bora

4. Marco Island, Florida

Marco Island is the perfect destination for those who crave a peaceful retreat but don’t have time to travel too far off the grid. The jewel of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands, Marco Island’s soft white beaches overlook the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Scavenge for seashells or hit the links for a sunny session of golf. Explore the Everglades in a swamp buggy or enjoy a rejuvenating nature hike at the Rookery Bay Reserve.

5. Lewis and Harris, Outer Hebrides

A visit to Lewis and Harris is like stepping into the pages of a Scottish fairy tale. In Lewis—the northern part of the island – the legendary Callanish Standing Stones poke up from the ground like a strange and massive rock city. The Blackhouse, the Shawbost Norse Mill and Kiln, and the Carloway Broch all offer a peek at what island life used to look like. In southern Harris, the east side beaches boast some of the oldest known rocks in the world, dating back millions of years. Cruise over to the volcanic islands of St. Kilda to explore the ruins of a medieval village.

6. Naxos, Cyclades

A spot of white in the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, the island of Naxos is a unique blend of ancient ruins and beach culture. The largest of the Cycladic Islands, Naxos is the childhood home of none other than Zeus, king of the gods. Upon arrival in Naxos, hike over a causeway to Palatia, where the Portara, a stone gateway to an ancient temple that no longer exists, stands alone, the symbol of the island. At sunset, the views of the island, and the sea beyond, are breathtaking.

Naxos

7. Aitutaki, Southern Cook Islands

This small island encased in a triangular barrier reef boasts incredible lagoons. Relax with a intimate picnic on the alabaster beach of one of Aitutaki’s minor islands, uninhabited and lined with swaying palm trees. Despite its heartbreaking beauty, Aitutaki isn’t (yet) flooded with tourists, due to its relatively difficult-to-reach location. For off-the-beaten-sandbar holiday-making, Aitutaki is a prime destination, especially for those seeking unbridled romantic ambiance.

8. Nosy Be, Antsiranana Province

“Nosy Be?” Is that a typo for “Noisy Bee?” Nope. It means “big island” and it is just that; a large island off the northwest coast of Madagascar. Here you’ll find volcanic lakes, lazy lemurs, rum distilleries, Ylang Ylang plantations and intricate coral reefs that are practically begging to be explored. Flora and fauna lovers will be in seventh heaven at the beautiful Lokobe Nature Special Reserve. Audiophiles should visit in May, to experience the four-day Donia Music Festival.

9. Easter Island, Chile

Located in the South Pacific more than 2,000 miles off the Chilean coast, Easter Island’s not the easiest place to reach. (If you’re interested, the easiest access is by air from Santiago or Tahiti.) But isolation has helped preserve the 1,500-year-old mysterious congregation of volcanic rock sculptures (maoi) that’s the island’s biggest claim to fame. After exploring the unique landscape, relax on an uncrowded beach and ponder one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

Easter Island

10. Ko Tao, Surat Thani Province

Drifting serenely in the Gulf of Thailand, the palm-fringed island of Ko Tao takes its name from the abundant sea turtles that reside on its shores. White sand beaches sheltered by steep hills – some only accessible with four-wheel drive vehicles – and 300 days of sun per year invite long afternoons of lounging.

Do you agree with this selection or are there other islands that you think are more deserving of making the top 10?

Hidden all over the world are towns that you may think only exist in your dreams. They are villages full of quintessential charm, almost too perfect to be real. However, these dream towns, they do exist. Here are 19 towns that are so beautiful, you will scarcely believe that they aren’t movie sets.

I wish I could see each and every one before I exit this mortal coil. Each of these places are going on my bucket list.

Silver Lake Resort

20 Places You Have to See!

20. Lantern Festival, Taiwan

Here’s a photo you’ve likely seen doing the endless rounds on social media – and it’s little wonder due to the spectacular nature of the photograph, which encapsulates the spirit and wonder of the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Taiwan.

19. Great Wall of China

Unless you’ve been living under a rock since you were born, you would have a preconceived notion of what these series of fortifications made out of stone, brick, wood and other materials look like. Sure, it’s not your usual ‘see it in your 20s’ destination, but at some point you’ve gotta wear thin of partying til the sun rises, so go on – get cultured…

18. Santorini, Greece

Here’s one of the most over-photographed little seaside towns the world has to offer. Regardless of how many times snaps like this have made it to instagram, this would still have to be one of the ‘must see’ travel destinations for 20-somethings.

17. Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, USA

If you think it’s beautiful in the heat of summer, then try visiting Yosemite in a thick layer of snow in winter – words just can’t describe.

181177235

16. Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan

Here’s one you probably haven’t heard of and neither had I when writing this article, so you should probably do a quick copy+paste and check it out if you’re looking for something seriously off the beaten path…

tiger

15. XS Nightclub, Las Vegas

Okay so it wouldn’t be a list for 20-somethings if it didn’t include Vegas – and what better inclusion than that of Vegas’ arguably most happening club – XS. The only problem is getting in…. be prepared for guest lists, long lines, and crowds to leave even VIPs feeling smothered.

xs

14. Havana, Cuba

Now here’s an unsung hero lying quietly and waiting for the world to discover her. Havana is indeed a time warp and the central hub of Cuba. It’s progressively gaining popularity for travelers seeking adventure beyond the confines of a contiki bus tour, so be sure to get in before it’s too late.

163081092

13. Petra, Jordan

For a reason that is beyond me, Jordan remains one of the less celebrated destinations to visit for travelers seeking out-of-this-world experiences and unbeatable history/culture. The photo speaks for itself…

12. New York City, New York, USA

It’s an oldie but a goodie – New York, New York. You should definitely try to make it here in your 20s and soak up the underground bars and clubs, bustling streets above ground, and the peaceful oasis that is central park. It’s a concrete jungle, sure… but it’s where dreams are made of – right Jay Z?

File:New-York-Jan2005.jpg

11. Lapland, Finland

If you haven’t seen photos of the northern lights – one of the world’s most astounding natural beauties – then be sure to throw the term ‘Lapland Finland northern lights’ into Google. Lapland is a great place to base yourself for some serious star-gazing in the winter months. Expect to be sitting in permanent darkness without a clue as to the time, but its an unrivaled experience you won’t get elsewhere.

10. Death Valley, USA

Okay, so there’s not much there….. and people that have been will probably tell you not to go (probably being the key word here). But it’s a great place to visit if you’re doing the Coast to Coast road trip or on your way through to Vegas for Los Angeles.

death valley

9. Mount Fitz Roy, on the border of Chile and Argentina

This one’s much more of a challenge and probably one to keep on the dreamlist rather than the bucketlist – but nonetheless, we have one of the world’s hardest climbs situated on the border between Chile and Argentina…. The photo certainly does it justice.

170155865

8. Bodø, Norway

Scandinavian countries are sometime viewed as a distant dream to 20-somethings visiting Europe. But if you’re looking for something slightly (as in a lot) more fulfilling than the usual booze cruise bus that darts its way from one central European country to the next, then check out the likes of Norway, Sweden, and even Denmark. These countries are culturally rich, and a complete different experience to anywhere else in Europe. Here we have a quaint seaside town in Norway named ‘Bodo’…

148720943

7. Carnival, Rio di Janeiro, Brazil

South America isn’t quite as popular among 20-somethings as the likes of Europe or the USA – but there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be! So if you’re going to go, why not go all out!!!!

162045079

6. Drake Passage, Antarctica

Probably not what you had in mind for a trip in your twenties, but if you ever got the chance, you would surely take it. Antarctica is probably the only place on this earth that you can guarantee won’t have a McDonald’s by 2020. So go on, look into it.

drake passage

5. The Inca Trail, Peru

Another highly celebrated image on social media is the Inca Trail in Peru. For active travelers this is the perfect opening into altitude treks and is a great bucketlist destination to hit up in your 20′s.

148097742

4. Salt Flats, Bolivia

The picture just says it all…..

3. The Rhino Charge, Nairobi, Kenya

An African safari is probably the highest ‘must do in my 20s’ on my list. I’ve still got a few years left yet so I’m sure I’ll get there one day – but if you ask me, the sooner the better!

rhino charge kenya

2. Disneyworld, Orlando, Florida

You’re probably thinking ‘uh…what?’, but let’s think about this for a moment – it’s better late than never, and if you ask me, growing up is overrated anyway. This is one of my MUST SEE destinations before I climb my way into the 30′s, and it should surely be on your list too.

149699548

1. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Finally, a hidden gem in central Europe – Cesky Krumlov. It’s just a short 2 hour bus ride into southern Bohemia from Prague, and would have to be one of my favorite finds in Europe. If you can help it, try to visit during the summer for rafting down the vlatva river with various camping spots along the way.

Let’s Go to Orlando, Florida

Coastal Travel Vacations

Coastal Travel Vacations

A world-renowned destination, Orlando is the place to make all of your vacation dreams come true. Of course, it is beloved for its theme parks: Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida, Sea World Orlando and many others.

But it also beckons with world-class resorts, shopping opportunities for every budget, all-season golf courses, and some of the most enticing dining opportunities on the planet.

Less known but equally inviting are the downtown sections of Orlando itself and many nearby towns in Central Florida – places that celebrate public art and take pride in offering a myriad of cultural opportunities. Come to Orlando – and bring the family – and wish upon a star.
