Cape Cod’s Luxury Bed and Breakfasts

Coastal Travel Vacations Coastal Freedom at it's BEST

Coastal Travel Vacations
Coastal Freedom at its BEST

If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air
Quaint little villages here and there
You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod

The singer Patti Page had not yet visited Massachusetts’s seaside haven when she made this ode to the Cape a hit in the 1950s. Today the island’s sand dunes remain high and white and salt still pinches the coastal air. Cape Coders’ reverence for colonial history has protected some of the most charming hamlets from commercial intrusion.

Cape Cod is for all seasons, but late Spring into Autumn are especially resplendent. Depending on your state of mind and your traveling companion, here are three of the Cape’s most gracious B&Bs.

Best for romance

The Inn at Cape Cod (circa 1820), Yarmouth Port

Majestic, classic, refined, the Inn at Cape Cod has a distinct Kensington sensibility, owing to its English innkeepers who meticulously restored to its current grandeur the former home of the wealthy Sears family. The Inn is listed in the National Registrar of Historic Places, but there are a few additions, like a gloriously light-filled breakfast room where an ever-changing four-course breakfast is a culinary delight.

Inn at Cape Cod

The Inn’s elegantly appointed rooms (tailored Georgian furnishings, antique carved beds with luxurious linens) have views of the hamlet’s old stone walls and classic salt-box homes. Legend has it that the four-poster in the Sears Room was shipped from England for a visit by Queen Victoria, who never did arrive. Just across the lawn is the Old Yarmouth Inn (circa 1690), now an award-winning restaurant. Savor a pint or dine under its 17th century hand hewed beams before turning in.

Best for charm

The Captain Kelley House Bed and Breakfast (circa 1835), Centerville

This sprawling Greek Revival built by Sea Captain David Kelley is an architectural stand-out on a historic Main Street lined with antique seafarer’s homes. Inside, simple period pieces and dashes of color have revived The Captain Kelley House into a place of intimacy and warmth. Airy, light-filled bedrooms extend off a narrow, winding staircase. Each room has wallpaper with a nautical theme or cheerful stripes (yellow and white, blue and white). Fresh white linens, embroidered pillows and heritage patchwork quilts dress carved antique beds. The floor-to-ceiling windows of the flagship Captain Kelley Room overlook lush gardens.

Mornings, expect a breakfast performance known as the “Scone Wars” when the inn-keeping couple vie for baking the most spectacular scone. On one visit, gingered Lemon Curd squared off with Summer Berry as the bakers serenaded guests with Broadway tunes and Jamaican Reggae, performed in full regalia. In October, the B&B will hosts its last Downtown Abbey weekend: High Tea, a formal, five course dinner served by “footmen,” and a champagne toast to the Crawley family.

Best for family

High Pointe Inn (contemporary), West Barnstable

For long stays, High Pointe Inn is a favorite among European travelers and families. Casually elegant in an upscale residential neighborhood, the Inn’s homey ambiance invites trekking in sand after a day at the beach or sipping an aperitif as the logs crackle in the living room fireplace. The rooms and en suite bathrooms are modern and spacious. In the Sand Dollar Room an impressive white brick, wood-burning fireplace cozies up the cathedral ceilings. Families favor the self-contained Treetops Garden Suite with its private entrance and living quarters equipped with gas fireplace.

High Pointe deck

From the second story deck, which runs the length of the Inn, there are views of protected marshland that extends to Cape Cod Bay. On a clear day you can glimpse the dunes of Sandy Neck Beach. A pin drop tranquility prevails. At breakfast, arguably the best popovers in New England are served with chunky local jams and steaming coffee poured into pre-warmed cups.

Luxury Travel in Australia with Coastal – Freedom at it’s BEST!

For anyone traveling abroad, Australia is a top destination with a certain fondness for the luxury things in life. If you’re looking for a five-star travel experience than few countries compare to the land ‘Down Under’. This vast country is one of the most diverse in the world and blends culture and culinary excellence with rural landscapes and urban activities in a way that only the laid-back Aussies could do.

Australia

Bespoke travel

Luxury travel in Australia can be individually tailored around your needs and preferences, taking in the sights and sounds that few tourists get to see and traveling the way you want to travel, whether that is by private jet, helicopter, or train. Heck, you don’t even have to travel at all if you don’t want to. This is your luxury holiday and if you want to lazy around on a beach at a private resort at the Great Barrier Reef then so be it.

The luxury travel industry in Australia is booming at the moment and there is a wide range of companies willing to offer bespoke holidays. These holidays are generally put together by travel experts with years of experience. They are created to show off the best of what the country has to offer with five-star service all the way. Privacy and security are guaranteed aspects of luxury travel, and all that is required of you is to pick a theme and enjoy what comes.

Remember that just because you’re traveling in luxury, doesn’t mean that the worst can’t happen. It’s important to stay protected whilst traveling through Australia – so ensure you find a travel insurance product to suit your needs.

Touring the country

The best kind of luxury holiday in Australia is one that takes in as much of the country as possible. Given the sheer size of the country, traveling demands significant time, so two weeks off work is not going to be enough.

In most cases, travel will begin in Australia’s most cosmopolitan city: Sydney. Here you experience world-class culture, food, and shopping, as well as stunning natural beauty and plenty of energetic activity. This being the largest city in Australia means there is never any shortage of things to do and see – from relaxing on a cruise along Sydney harbour, to enjoying a cocktail on Bondi Beach, Sydney is a luxury as it comes.

Heading south first-class all the way, you can experience another coastal city: the sports and arts-obsessed Melbourne. With a relaxed European feel, Melbourne is like a small town on a big scale and perfect for the luxury traveler. The wine capital of Australia, Adelaide should also be on the agenda for any high-end traveler, and the city is close to the wonderful Kangaroo Island, a sure stop for all nature lovers.

Speaking of nature, no luxury trip should be without a visit to the Great Barrier Reef and a spot of scuba diving along the way. Great diving and luxury cruises can also be experienced at the unspoilt Lizard Island.

Take an Amazing Amazon Cruise in Style and Luxury..

For those travelers who are becoming increasingly bored with the seemingly endless cruising holidays available today, there is a truly unique alternative… a luxury Amazon river cruise. Embark on the voyage of a lifetime, sailing the earth’s mightiest river and the world’s last unexplored wilderness – the Amazon.

Amazon river cruise

The very first luxury vessel in the region, the Aqua Amazon caters to the most discriminating and adventurous of world travelers, providing an unforgettable journey into areas penetrated by only a privileged few. The Aqua affords the opportunity to truly “get away from it all” and explore the unexplored; without abandoning the comforts, security, and five-star luxuries which are now expected.  As your ship docks along the river, knowledgeable and experienced naturalists will take you into remote estuaries in the Peruvian rain forest and the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. As you explore these pristine wilderness areas teaming with wildlife, you will encounter local people living in villages as they have for centuries. And when the day’s sightseeing is over, the comforts of your luxury floating hotel will await you.

Amazon river cruise

Immerse yourself in the remarkable scenes and sounds of the rainforest, its people, cultures and exotic wildlife. The largest tropical rainforest on earth, the Amazon encompasses 4 million sq miles throughout South America, and an Amazon River cruise gives you a unique insight into this great wilderness. Every single traveler has fantasized about trekking through the Amazon rainforest or waking up to the call of a thousand birds – this is the chance to indulge that fantasy!

A seven night Amazon River luxury cruise on the Aqua begins in the remote colonial city of Iquitos (Peru) and transports guests in exceptional comfort deep into the Amazon rainforest, along the Ucayali River, the Amazon’s largest tributary, as well as other neighboring rivers (the Yarapa and Dorado), each one rich in vibrant wildlife and thriving rainforests. Perhaps go fishing for the many species of Amazon fish, or explore into the dense jungle on foot in search of three-toed sloths, toucans, macaws then come back to the comfort of our skiffs to meet taricaya turtles in their natural habitat and hunt for endangered pink dolphins, unique to the Amazon.

Amazon river cruise

Custom built specifically for Amazon cruising, the 40m Aqua river boat comfortably accommodates up to 24 guests in 12 exterior suites measuring 240 sq ft, and all with large panoramic windows. All suites are fully air-conditioned, superbly finished in natural materials and have en suite private lounging and stone bathrooms. All are available as twins or king sizes double.

Whilst every day on this luxury cruise is packed with excursions, you can instead opt to spend the day lounging on the sun deck, seeing all the sights without even stepping ashore. This outdoor lounge features ample sun chairs and a deck Jacuzzi to cool off. In the evening, retire indoors to the spacious luxury living room finished with wood flooring and soft lighting…relax with a glass of wine in comfort amongst the plethora of plump couches, and watch the captivating landscape pass you by through panoramic floor to ceiling windows.

Amazon river cruise

All meals, bar, excursions, park fees, and transfers are included in a standard package. Spacious and indulgent, yet intimate enough to feel entirely exclusive, the Aqua incorporates generous living space with the ability to truly explore the unexplored regions of the River Amazon.

10 Essential Elements That Make the Most Luxury Ski Vacation!

You’ll probably have you own ideas of what constitutes the ideal ski break. It could be that a trip to the Alps isn’t complete without your pooch, your favourite pillow, perhaps your own library or maybe a suitcase full of Baked Beans, Sliced bread and Marmite. Leaving your idiosyncrasies to one side, I think it would be hard to disagree with the list I compiled in an idle moment while I waited for the ski shuttle to take me to the nearest ski lift, which brings me nicely to the first essential.

1. Ski-in ski-out, private ski instructor

No clumping around the resort in ski-boots like a man in treacle with stiff legs, a no brainer, strap on your ski’s at the back door and away you go. And on return, a carving turn with a flourish, bringing yourself to a sudden stop and voila! time to put the kettle on. Make sure you have the ability to stop in time as the back door is a pretty solid object and you don’t want to be in casualty with broken bones on your first day. A private ski instructor wouldn’t go amiss either, ensuring you don’t come face to face with the aforementioned back door.

2. Chalet interiors with the wow factor

You’ve waited all year for this moment, raided all the piggy banks to get the best accommodation you could afford and poured over the photos a million times. You want to be able to walk in your chosen chalet and be blown away. Immediately your already elevated spirits are turned up another notch or two as you wander round, open-mouthed, from room to room, getting giddy and nudging each other saying “the photos just don’t do this place justice.” It’s a well-known fact that a well thought out and designed interior with classy furnishings and objects induces a feeling of well-being and contentment. Definitely a case of money well spent.

3. Open log fire

There’s something primeval about sitting near a log fire, staring into the flames, feeling the warmth, daydreaming. The complete opposite of what you’ve experienced in your days skiing; snow, ice, freezing temperatures. Here you can thaw on the outside
while you allow the  delightful red wine, with hints of summer breeze to do it’s job on the inside.  A must have element for the perfect ski vacation.

4. A terrace with stunning views

We all love the mountains don’t we? They are pretty special places, covered in natures cotton wool, the jagged peaks, the mysterious places high above the valley below where few people ever venture. Magnificent and untouchable and all visible from your wonderful terrace.  At nights the lights twinkle below, the stars twinkle above, the hot tub steams, this is as good as it gets.

Chalet Le Chardon

5. A top chef with great selection of wines from the wine cellar

You booked catered, you sit back the first night and await your first evening meal.  Go on, impress me! And do you know what? He does. Five superb, delicious courses, complete with descriptions and wines to complement from the extensive wine cellar.
An education for the mind and the palette; this gastronome would win Master Chef and he’s yours for the duration.

Luxury ski chalet

6. Spa facilities, gym, swimming pool, massage

You’re definitely pigging out on the top quality nosh, it would be rude not to, after all it’s not often you get Jaime Olivier to yourself for a week. What to do? Easy, wander down to the indoor swimming pool, put in a couple of lengths, have a session on the treadmill, have a look at the weights, then get a beefy masseuse to slap you about for a while, well, you deserve it, you ate way too much last night and the guilt is starting to kick in.

The Lodge

7. Arrive by private jet

Avoid the hoi polloi and hob nob with the elite, no queuing, no waiting, no mad scramble for your luggage on the carousel, that’s if it’s managed to board the same plane as you.  Arrive fresh, in half the time, feeling like a celeb. It could become addictive.

Private jet

8. Internet access

Go on, admit it, you’re joined at the hip to your phone, iPad, laptop, tablet and the social networking sites just couldn’t survive your absence for a whole week. I’m guilty too, I need the internet like a junkie needs a fix. Essential, how else are you going to plaster pictures of your evening meal, ski fun, chalet interior, best mate and the odd selfie on the net in an attempt to induce envy in the folk back home.

9. Grand piano

Would be nice but not essential. Even if you can’t play the damn thing it sure does look good and ups the ante in the, “wow! look what we got” bragging rights department. If you can play, it’s perhaps not often you get to tinkle the keys of a top quality Steinway. Makes chopsticks sound like Lang Lang’s in the house.

10. Chalet entertainment, cinema, private nightclub, private bar, games room

After the fine dining experience earlier in the evening a wander into the home cinema to catch a film is a treat.
There could be a few arguments over what that might be but there are another six nights and anyway he who
holds the remote is “King of the Screen.” The race for the remote could get ugly.

After the film, perform your own Saturday Night Fever, bust some moves and throw some shapes, if you can even
move in an energetic fashion after the skiing, the spell in the gym and the fight with the masseuse.
Mix your own cocktails and make up your own rules regarding ratio’s, one part fruit six parts alcohol, sounds about right.

An argument over the rules of pool, snooker, darts, Snakes & Ladders is always fun and helps to cement
and strengthen bonds with friends and family.

So there you have it, all the elements needed for the perfect ski break. You don’t necessarily have to have
them all and arguably some, you could well do without but a full house keeps everyone occupied and happy.
